WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Rome Art Residencies is very excited to have Nathaniel Skousen join us for the first time! Nathaniel will be offering a week of highly enjoyable but intensive instruction in portrait painting in a supportive, creatively, energizing and immersive environment.

This course will entail a total of five studio days with a live model, six hours per day, supplemented by trips to museums, churches, and historical sites. Each day is spent making art, socializing with your fellow artists and enjoying the cultural treasures of Rome. On the final day, there will be a group dinner. Each day will be a full experience from morning to night!

In this workshop we will carefully explore classic method of alla prima with an emphasis on modeling and finish.

Artists, prepare to immerse yourself in a transformative exploration of value, color, and modern portrait techniques of renowned master Nathaniel Skousen. This intensive five-day workshop in Rome promises to unveil the secrets that defined the works of history's greatest painters: Values, Colors and Textures.

Nathaniel will guide you through a comprehensive journey, meticulously deconstructing the elements that breathe life into a painting.

Through insightful demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you'll delve into the nuances of lighting a model to capture their essence, harnessing color mixing and the expressive power of the palette knife, and mastering the strategies of value focus using the Value Palette, with your final vision in mind. Nathaniel will share his time-honored strategies for color control, value mapping, and achieving visual harmony through an intuitive understanding of color theory.

The first session will focus on textural portrait painting, exploring techniques for rendering a subject. You'll learn to leverage lighting, palette knives, and brushwork to create depth and dimension, while strategically mixing colors that honor the principles of chroma and complementary theory.

The second session will transition to a more refined approach, guiding you through the intricacies of a female portrait with an emphasis on finesse. Here, you'll discover the power of acrylic underpainting, advanced color control methodologies, and value-driven strategies for capturing both light and shadow with unparalleled realism.

Throughout these immersive sessions, Nathaniel will share his professional insights, reference materials, and a curated selection of portrait painting supplies, from the paints and brushes to the canvas surfaces preferred for fast portraits.

Painting begins on Monday, May 26th. On May 30th will be the last day for painting and a group dinner the following night. Each day will be a full experience from morning to night!

Studios are located at Palazzo Velli Expo in Trastevere, Rome.

Address: Piazza di Sant'Egidio 10, 00153 Roma
